HONOR YOUR SKIN IN YOUR 20′S, 30′S, 40′S & BEYOND

Everyone wants ageless, radiant, flawless looking skin, right? So how do you achieve your best complexion and stop tell-tale signs of aging in their tracks? I sat down with top Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and skin care expert Dr. John Diaz to find out exactly what anti-aging skin care regimens to follow in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and beyond! Enjoy!

20’s

What is the condition of the skin during this decade?

“Sun damage has not yet started to show. The skin still has youthful volume and great elasticity due to active collagen production. Preventative measures are important during this decade. Adult acne can be an issue at this time. If there are fine lines or any discoloration they are typically mild and can be treated easily with the right skin care products.”

What should women and men do to prevent or treat signs of aging in their 20’s?

“Using the right skin care products for this age group is key. I recommend clinically proven, medical grade products. The following is a basic regimen I give to patients who are in their twenties and are concerned with preventing and treating signs of aging.”

“Cleanse, this hydrating facial cleanser gently removes impurities, makeup and toxins from the skin. Refresh eye cream, it is never too early to start nourishing this delicate area since the first signs of aging are likely to appear here. Protect, a moisturizing sunscreen with antioxidants is imperative to prevent premature aging. Renew Vitamin C and E with Ferulic Acid serum for added antioxidant protection and collagen stimulation. Stimulate, a medical grade retinol that helps increase cell turnover and prevents fine lines, wrinkles and acne.”

30’s

What changes are starting to happen in the skin during the 30’s?

“Fine lines are beginning to form in this age group. Some patients are starting to see discoloration, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation (brown spots) and/or ruddiness. Skin becomes thinner due to loss of collagen. Cell turnover slows down resulting in a more dull complexion.”

What changes should be made to the basic skin care regimen you described above? Are there other treatments that you would recommend in addition to products at this point?

“Now is the time to build on your basic skin care regimen and to start incorporating professional skin care treatments. This could also include adding Botox and fillers. The skin care products I recommend are, Cleanse anti-aging cleanser, Refresh eye cream, Renew, Vitamin C and E with Ferulic Acid serum, Protect sunscreen and moisturizer (same as above) with the addition of Exfoliate, a gentle yet effective facial scrub that removes dead skin cells thus exposing and revealing the healthy skin underneath and swapping out your medical grade retinol for a prescription tretinoin like Reverse (available in office only, Dr. John Diaz), to treat fine lines and to prevent new ones from forming. If adult acne is an issue, Reverse will even help keep skin acne free.”

“A good monthly professional skin care treatment that I recommend to my patients is the HydraFacial. It is a resurfacing treatment that is great for all skin types that hydrates, exfoliates and protects the skin. If there are fine lines and wrinkles present when the patient is at rest (not talking or making facial expressions) I may recommend injectables like Botox or Fillers to treat the visible wrinkles and to prevent them from becoming deeper and more pronounced.”

40’s

What’s happening to our skin in our 40’s?

“Sun damage in the form of lines, wrinkles, blotchiness, red spots, and ruddiness becomes more apparent. Collagen production slows down. Elasticity decreases. Skin retains less moisture. Some patients may begin to see deep lines and wrinkles. There may be some laxity of the skin on the lower face and neck.”

What should we be doing at this stage?

“Advanced Skin Care: Cleanse, Protect, Refresh, Renew, Reverse or Light Plus (both available by prescription only in office only, Dr. John Diaz). Light Plus is a prescription tretinoin with hydroquinone that reduces brown spots, increases collagen production and cell turnover as well as improves skin tone. Injectables like Botox and/or Fillers can be used to smooth wrinkles and fill in deep lines. Consider doing an Ultherapy treatment. Ultherapy is a nonsurgical treatment that uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen to tighten mild skin laxity of the lower face, neck and chest.”

50’s, 60’s and Beyond

What now?

“If you have been diligently following anti-aging regimens like the ones I described above, then keep on doing what you are doing (or at least start now!). Consider having Ultherapy treatments to treat sagging jowls, loose skin on the neck and lines or laxity on the chest. Injectables are a must in these decades, Botox is great for lines around the eyes, between the brows and on the forehead. Fillers restore volume to the cheeks and lips. They also fill in deep nasolabial folds (smile lines). Laser treatments like the C02 laser can significantly improve skin texture and tone in these decades. Most patients in their 50’s are concerned about their eyes and jaw lines. Patients in their 60’s are starting to consider facelifts. This is a perfect time to start treating signs of aging with surgery. If you are considering facial plastic surgery (or any type of plastic surgery for that matter) make sure to go to a board certified plastic surgeon. Do your research and review websites for before and after photos. Once you’re ready, schedule a consultation with a surgeon you like. I recommend bringing in a photo of you from 10 years ago so your surgeon will have a clear picture of the natural result that you want. There have been many innovative new techniques that are designed to create a refreshed look after surgery. Techniques from the 80’s and 90’s which create a “pulled” look are no longer used.”

There you have it, the inside scoop on how celebrities and the Beverly Hills elite have seemingly stopped aging. Now you too can be ageless in your 20′s, 30′s, 40′s and beyond!
